| Dr. Sriram Shamasunder completed his training in internal medicine at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in June 2008. As a physician who trained at a public hospital and has provided medical care abroad, Dr. Shamasunder is interested in the delivery of comprehensive health care in resource poor settings. In addition to his clinical work training medical students and residents on the medical service at UCSF in San Francisco, he spends much of his time abroad. Dr. Shamasunder spent 5 months in rural Burundi with the organization Village Health Works providing comprehensive primary and HIV care as well as designing innovative clinical programs. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti he led a group of Harvard surgeons in Western Haiti providing medical and surgical care in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Also in 2010, he spent five months in a hospital in rural Karnataka providing HIV and primary care as well as training medical personnel. Most recently, he has been working in Rwanda with the MOH and Partners in Health. Currently, in addition to his clinical and programmatic work in East Africa and India, he has applied for a grant to study NGO clinical design breakthroughs in vulnerable populations throughout Karnataka. He was awarded the Young Physician of the Year in 2010, by the Northern California Chapter of the American College of Physicians. As a Fulbright-Nehru scholar to India, Dr. Shamasunder proposes to study innovations among non-governmental organizations in providing care for vulnerable populations in disease specific areas compared to the standard of care. The research will focus on the social and clinical specific interventions that improve care and could potentially be replicated on a larger scale. |
